Trade Futures Options on IBKR with NeonChainX

How to trade ES, NQ, CL, and GC futures options in NeonChainX on Interactive Brokers. Select Future, add a root, and use the same one-click execution and TP/SL as stock options.

Published: August 17, 2026

Paper first: Futures options move fast and use large multipliers. Practice on a paper account (TWS 7497 / IB Gateway 4002), confirm quotes and fills, then switch to live ports (7496 TWS / 4001 Gateway).

Futures options in NeonChainX are options on liquid futures products (ES, NQ, CL, GC, and micros), not a futures trading blotter. You get the same multi-symbol chain, one-click orders, and TP/SL you already use on stocks and indexes.

This guide applies to NeonChainX 2.2.0 and later. For API ports and first-time setup, see Getting Started.

What you trade

NeonChainX adds a Future type next to Stock and Index. Enter a futures root (for example ES), and the app qualifies a live option chain through TWS or IB Gateway.

Supported roots:

RootProduct
ESE-mini S&P 500
MESMicro E-mini S&P 500
NQE-mini Nasdaq-100
MNQMicro E-mini Nasdaq-100
RTYE-mini Russell 2000
CLCrude Oil (WTI)
GCGold

MGC (Micro Gold) often has no bid/ask in TWS, so quotes and mid orders may not work. Use GC instead.

You still need the matching IBKR market data (CME equity index, NYMEX energy, COMEX metals, and the related options). Without those subscriptions, the chain will not load.

Add a futures symbol

  1. Connect to TWS (paper 7497) or IB Gateway (paper 4002). Use live ports only after paper works.
  2. Set Type to Future.
  3. Enter the root (ES, NQ, CL, GC, …) and click Add.
  4. NeonChainX resolves a front-month future and a live option chain. The Last column is the future price, not the option premium.
  5. Futures and futures-option rows show an F mark on the Symbol cell so you can tell them apart from stocks and indexes.

If the nearest future month has no options (common on gold and crude), the app walks later months until a chain exists. You do not pick the futures month by hand.

Strikes, orders, and exits

The rest of the workflow matches stock and index options:

  1. Enter a strike-at price to show ITM / ATM / OTM buttons.
  2. Click a strike to Buy to Open (market or mid).
  3. Positions appear in Sell to Close. Close, sell leftover, and TP/SL use the future last as the underlying.
  4. Orders route to the product exchange (CME, NYMEX, COMEX), not SMART.

TP/SL still supports dual triggers: underlying (the future) and option last traded price. See TP/SL for IBKR options.

Spreads and multi-leg combos are not supported. Expired dates are skipped so the expiry dropdown starts at the next live date.
